5.55ofw > cfw without pandora?

Okay so I downloaded some Easy ChickHEN CFW installer which specifically states "without pandora". Then before using it i checked some of the comments under the main post and apparently it would most likely brick my PSP because it is running official firmware 5.55. (This wasn't specifically stated, but most people that didn't have version 5.00 or 5.03 couldnt get it to work.

Basically I'm trying to get custom firmware running on it without using a pandora battery, and ChickHEN seems to provide the option to do so, but maybe not on my firmware. Just need this all cleared up. (Also I checked my model and it's a Phat so it should work fine with ChickHEN)

So my first question is is it possible to downgrade 5.55 without a pandora battery?

Second is if ChickHEN is so great as an alternative (not needing a pandora) why doesn't everyone use it?

If not ChickHEN specifically, the fact that it uses a tiff exploit to run unsigned code doesn't seem a bit too good to be true to anyone?

If none of this is possible can I downgrade to 5.00 or 5.03 from 5.55 to get ChickHEN to work?

I'm new to this but I've had experience softmodding iPods, iPhones and Wiis before so don't explain to me like I'm a total noob, I will understand most of what is thrown at me. Hope to get this working =]

No you can't, you have no other choice, you need pandora and magic memory stick to downgrade and install M33, then you can choose GEN or update to M33-6.

well lets start off, it is made for 5.03, its for 5.03 lol

Its used for those who do not have a Pandora Battery to install CFW, or those who use it for 5.03 GEN A for HEN or CFWENabler 3.60<Probably why ChickHEN R3 got cancelled, or just for a plain use of loading homebrew.

Of corse, this is only for 5.03, any OFW above it will not work and will require the Pandora. Lower OFW's require you to MANUALLY update to 5.03. NOt everyone uses it because Pandora's Unbrick PSP's and can install CFW directly. ChickHEN can run homebrew to flash the CFW.

Grrreat. Okay on that note, what's the deal with modifying the battery yourself? When you cut whatever pin, it goes into service mode, then after do you have to re-solder it to turn it back into a normal battery?

As far as I know the other option is to use an already hacked PSP to run software which puts your battery into service mode, whereupon you can place that (now pandora) battery in an unmodded PSP and use it to install cfw? Is that correct? Then how do you turn it back to a normal battery?

If the above is true, I have a friend who also wants to put cfw on their old white Phat, but it's never been updated, so I'm assuming it's lower than 5.00ofw - I could update it to 5.00ofw, use ChickHEN to put cfw on it and then use that (now hacked) PSP to put my battery into service mode and hack mine?

I just need a lot of clarification, the guides I find around are non-specific in some areas. Thanks so far guys.

correct, to return the battery to normal, you just un soft mod it with any program(I used HellCat's Recovery Flasher v1.60

and btw: You need 5.03 OFW.

Required: WinRar or 7Zip or any other zip manager. i do not take any responsibility if you damage the PSP.

Part 1

You may skip part 1 if you already have 5.03 OFW

Step 1: Extract the 5.03 OFW, put it into your memorystick<PSP<GAME<UPDATE. ms0 is also the same as memory stick.

Step 2: Run the 5.03 OFW, wait for it to finish and DO NOT interrupt the update process.

Part 2: Code: 1004

Now that you have 5.03 OFW in your PSP, its time for ChickHEN R2!

Step 1: Extract the ChickHEN R2 folder, put the h.bin file in the root of your MS(basicly ms0, the first thing when you go to your MS.)

Step 2: Put the extracted PHAT pics into your ms0:/PSP/PHOTOS folder.

Step 3: once you have the photos in, go to your XMB(PSP Dashboard) and go to pictures, memorystick and then go to the chickhen folder. once in, wait for the pics to load and wait.

Step 4: The screen should glitch and become brown, and your PSP should reboot. You are now in ChickHEN R2 mode. To check, go to settings, system settings and system information. it should say 5.03 ChickHEN R2. if not, triy again.

Tip: Press X more than once, say 5 times fast when going to the ChickHEN folder.

You are ready for Part 3, the good part.

Part 3: The M33 Flashing! Code: 1005

Step 1: Once you are in ChickHEN R2 Mode, you can run Hellcat's Recovery Flash 1.60.
-Extract Hellcat's Recovery Flasher 1.60 and put it into ms0:/PSP/GAME/RECOVERY

-Extract the 5.00 OFW and rename it to 500.pbp. then it goes to ms0:/PSP/GAME/RECOVERY

Step 2: Back into the XMB, scroll to game, memorystick and then Hellcat's Recovery Flasher 1.60.

Step 3: Once in Hellcat's Recovery Flasher 1.60, agree to continue. Now select install M33 CFW of the above Firmware. The flashing should start.
-DO NOT STOP ONCE YOU START!

Step 4: Once the flash is done, it may ask you to reboot by pressing any button. do that. You now have 5.00 M33-6 CFW!

After Flash: Some Recommended Settings. Code: 1006

Hold R while you turn your PSP on.

here are the recommended settings that should be under configuration.

UMD Mode set as M33 Driver
Use Vshmenu set as enables
XMB Usb Device: i would always have it set on Memory Stick to be safe
Use M33 network update set as enabled
use version.txt - may want to enable, optional
Speed Up MS access set as ALWAYS

and:

there is an advanced tab/option/samething, select it
after that there is an advanced configuration tab, select it
and from there enable XMB plugins, GAME plugins and POPS plugins.

To Make A Pandora: Run Hellcat's Recovery Flasher v.160 and select the option to make the battery a Pandora one. Do the same thing to Un-Pandora your battery by selecting the option to make your battery normal when you are done.

How To Make A Magic Memory Stick(MMS) Code: 1013

Download Rain's Ultra Lite MMS Maker for 5.00M33-4 and 5.00OFW both from here:

Easy Steps

1. Rename the 5.00OFW eboot.pbp to 500.pbp.
2. Put 500.pbp in the root of your memory stick. The root is like the main menu of the memory stick, it is refer to as ms0:/. This should be alone and not in any folders.
3. Run Rain's Ultralite MMS Maker for 5.00M33-4. If you are on Vista/Windows 7, you must be greeted by a UAC screen.(The screen that asks for administrator privileges.
4. Point Rain's MMS Maker to where your memory stick is. Example: E:, G:, F: etc.
5. If you want to, you can Format your memory stick by checking the box that says Format Memory Stick. Be sure to check the box that says back up memory stick if you are.
6. Click Make MMS then wait.
7. It will tell you if you are done, then you may close the program.

How to use your Pandora Battery and Magic Memory Stick Code: 1014

Make sure the PSP is off, the MMS is removed, and that the Pandora Battery is removed.

Easy Steps

1. First insert your MMS.
2. Hold the L trigger.
3. Place the Pandora Battery in.
4. From there you can install CFW by selecting that option.

Updating to 5.00M33-6 when you are on a version prior to 5.00M33-6 Code: 1015

Start with this: Custom Firmware 5.00 M33-6 Released, PSP Hacks - PSP Slim Hacks

1. Download the 5.00M33-6 Update. Put that eboot in ms0:/PSP/GAME/UPDATE.

2. Go back to the XMB. Go to Game, then memory stick, and run the 5.00M33-6 Updater. Start it and then wait for it to finish. Do NOT stop in the middle of it.

3. When complete, it might restart since you upgraded from a version prior to 5.00. If not then it is OK.

Okay, 5.03, got it. Thanks a lot, this should work, just gotta get a hold of that other PSP and hope its lower than version 5.03. My friend has some newer games (e.g. Dissidia Final Fantasy) so it might have updated off one of their UMDs, thats the only problem. If that is the case, I can make a pandora battery and solder it back afterwards right?

yep, but I think people use Pencil lead sometimes since it contains graphite and that conducts electricity. If you need any help I will pull up a guide for you.

Alright, two more questions, I was just reading the stuff for the ChickHEN r2 release and it says all this stuff about not being able to boot isos and PSX games. Is ChickHEN like a temporary firmware from which you can install a cfw?

Secondly, I was just thinking that - graphite might do the trick, I figured cutting circuitry was a bit drastic.

To give you some info: This is a Phat PSP 1002 from Australia, and the battery says "MODEL PSP-110 Li-ion BATTERY PACK 3.6V 1800mAh" on the back, and "SONY 3.6v 1800mAh BATTERY PACK" and then the "ps" and PSP logos at the bottom (on the front of the battery, the side you see when you open the PSP). If you could grab a guide on how to get it open and use graphite on that it would be sweet. YouTube videos are not preferred, my internet is throttled at the moment, so if there's a text and pictures guide that's way better, but YouTube is okay if not.
