Default 2009 Tutorial to Installing Custom Firmware 5.00 M33 on your PSP.

Update 10/05: Since the release of ChickHEN R2 there is an option to install CFW on your PSP without the need of a Pandora Battery (Tool battery) We have put together a tutorial video and easy installer for this. Check this post for more info http://pspslimhacks.com/easy-chickhe...thout-pandora/

Edit: 09/Aug 09 - Of course if your PSP is bricked (Dead) doesn't power on, you'll need this guide still!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ok this is my guide to getting Custom Firmware (CFW) on that PSP of yours. I will try and make this as simple and straight forward as possible:

Basically we need to do two things:

To make a MMS (Magic Memory Stick) this will contain the files and firmware to install CFW on your PSP via the memory stick)
To soft mod / hard mod a battery to a Pandora battery
:arrows_right: Firstly check that your PSP model allows customs firmware to be installed -> Read this thread. To identify if you can flash CFW to your PSP

Making a Pandora Battery

Ok so lets make a Pandora Battery (aka Tool Battery, Service mode battery) This basically puts the PSP into service mode to allow you write to the NAND flash.

Here we have 3 options, either:

1. Soft mod the battery:
Get another PSP with custom firmware to make a Pandora Battery.

This method uses Hellcats Pandora installer to soft mod the battery to a Pandora or service mode battery. (Some newer batteries are Pandora proof btw)

Download Hellcats Pandora installer. Then Copy the folder "pan3xx" from that archive to /PSP/GAME on your memstick, and run it.

You will have the following menus ->

1. Click battery options....

2. Click make Pandora battery...Now you have a Pandora Battery

Can't soft mod a Battery? No other PSP handy with CFW installed? OK two options left.

2. You can hard mod your battery:
Please see this thread -> 2009 Newbies guide to making a Pandora battery

3. Or finally if all else fails:
Admit defeat and buy a cheap $3.49 Pandora battery?

Making a Magic Memory Stick (MMS) / DcV8

In order to get quickly to 5.00 M33 we are going to use Rain’s UltraLite MMS Maker for 5.00 M33-4. Download this and also Official PSP Firmware 5.00. Extract both archives into the same folder, the 5.00 eboot and Rain’s UltraLite MMS Maker for 5.00 M33-4.

Run Rain’s UltraLite MMS Maker for 5.00 M33-4 with the following options. Wait for it to finish. Now you have a MMS!

Now the final step

Place the newly made MMS in your PSP, Hold the (L) shoulder button, then insert the Pandora battery. If all works well, the Pandora battery should boot the PSP up, then the memory stick light should start flashing. Push (X) to start the process. Now follow the on screen firmware installation. You now have 5.00 M33-4 Custom Firmware !!!!

To get to PSP to Custom Firmware 5.00 M33-6 either run the network update via your PSP or see this post in order to get 5.00 M33-6: http://pspslimhacks.com/custom-firmw...33-6-released/

Also run Hellcats Pandora installer again and this time click to return the battery to a normal one You may also format your memory stick down the files on it are no longer needed if your not planning to Flash other PSP's.

Now you might want to check out our PSP Emulator section and PSP Downloads for homebrew games and apps. 8)

You need a PSP with custom firmware to run that. get a friends PSP that arlready has cfw on it. Or you could hard mod a battery. But check its able to take cfw.

Ok if you don't have another PSP you will need to hard mod the battery.

:arrows_right: http://pspslimhacks.com/forum/psp-tu...ndora-battery/

Which can be risky. If not you might have to buy a Pandora battery. there cheap around 3-5 dollars of ebay or online.
